Invisalign® FAQ's

Answers to your top Invisalign® questions — cost, candidacy, wear time, comfort and more. From the Invisalign orthodontists at Armbrecht & Wierenga.

Overview

Thinking about Invisalign® but not sure where to start? You're not alone — we hear a lot of the same questions from patients who are curious about clear aligners. Here are answers to the most common ones, straight from our Grand Rapids and Grandville Invisalign orthodontists.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Like the name suggests, Invisalign is a set of nearly invisible dental aligners that exert gentle pressure on your teeth to move them into optimal alignment. Before your aligners are made, our orthodontists use advanced computer imaging to map out your treatment in detail — planning every stage of movement so you can enjoy a beautifully straight smile. Your custom aligner sets are then fabricated and delivered to you as a complete series.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

Generally, Invisalign treatment takes about 12 months, though this varies based on each patient's needs. Teens may require slightly different timelines due to still-developing permanent teeth. The more complex the case, the longer treatment may take — our orthodontists will give you a realistic estimate during your consultation.

Who Is a Candidate for Invisalign?

Both teens and adults are great candidates for Invisalign, unless their dental situation requires more extensive orthodontic correction. Commitment is key — aligners must be worn 20–22 hours per day to stay on track. Our team will perform a quick evaluation to confirm candidacy before aligner production begins.

What Are the Benefits?

Most adult patients love the discreet look of Invisalign. Because the aligners are removable, oral hygiene is far easier — no brushing and flossing around wires and brackets. You can also eat whatever you like by simply removing your aligners before meals.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

The cost of Invisalign is generally comparable to traditional braces, and is determined by the length and complexity of your treatment. We offer flexible payment plans so you can make comfortable monthly payments. Ask our team about financing options during your free consultation.

How Often Do I Need Appointments?

You'll typically see us every 4–6 weeks during Invisalign treatment. Visits are usually shorter than braces adjustments since there are no wires to tighten.

Is Invisalign Painful?

You may experience some mild pressure for the first couple of days after switching to a new set of aligners — this is a sign your teeth are moving as planned. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help. Most patients find the temporary discomfort very manageable compared to the results they achieve.

After Treatment — Then What?

Once treatment is complete, our orthodontists will provide a custom retainer to wear at night, helping maintain your beautiful new smile long-term.

Every smile we create is one that works as beautifully as it looks — designed for function, health, and confidence that lasts a lifetime.
