How Invisalign® Compares to Traditional Braces

Invisalign® vs. braces — how do they really compare? Our Grand Rapids orthodontists break down diet, appearance, treatment process, and oral hygiene.

Overview

At first glance, Invisalign® and traditional metal braces seem similar — after all, both give you straight teeth and a stunning smile. But when you look more closely, there are real and meaningful differences between the two. Our Grand Rapids and Grandville orthodontists want every patient to feel confident in their choice before treatment begins. Here's a side-by-side look at four key areas.

Diet

With Invisalign, your diet stays completely unrestricted. Simply remove your aligners before eating, enjoy whatever you'd like, then gently brush your teeth and the trays before putting them back in. The only thing to be mindful of is rinsing or brushing before reinserting, to avoid trapping food particles.

Traditional braces require more care at the table. Foods that are hard, sticky, or chewy — popcorn, corn on the cob, raw carrots, caramel, chewing gum — can damage brackets or wires and need to be avoided throughout treatment.

Expert guidance, whichever option you choose

Appearance

Invisalign aligners are made from a clear, smooth plastic that's custom-fit to your mouth. Worn properly, they're virtually undetectable to others — a fact that matters enormously to many of our adult patients, who don't want visible metal during meetings, presentations, or social occasions. Traditional metal braces are, by nature, more visible, though ceramic braces offer a middle-ground option with tooth-colored brackets.

Treatment Process

Both treatments use controlled force to move teeth into their ideal positions — they just do it differently. Invisalign relies on a series of custom-molded plastic trays, each one planned precisely by your orthodontist to make incremental movements. You wear a new set every few weeks. Traditional braces use fixed metal brackets and wires that are periodically tightened by your doctor. Average Invisalign treatment runs 12–18 months; traditional braces typically take 1–3 years, depending on complexity.

Oral Hygiene

This is where many patients feel the clearest difference. With Invisalign, you remove your aligners to brush and floss normally — no navigating around brackets, wires, or rubber bands. Our orthodontists consistently see better oral hygiene outcomes in Invisalign patients for this reason. With traditional braces, diligent brushing and flossing around the hardware is still very achievable — it just takes more time and technique.

Both options are highly effective, and the best choice depends on your specific case and lifestyle. Our orthodontists are happy to walk you through all of this at your complimentary consultation.

Every smile we create is one that works as beautifully as it looks — designed for function, health, and confidence that lasts a lifetime.
