AirwayOrthodontics

Airway orthodontics in Grand Rapids & Grandville, MI — improving breathing, sleep quality, and jaw development for children and adults.

Overview

Orthodontics has traditionally focused on tooth alignment — but at Armbrecht & Wierenga Orthodontics, our doctors go well beyond simply moving teeth. Drs. Armbrecht, Wierenga, and Schwager have received specialized training in dentofacial orthopedics, the science of controlling and manipulating the bones of the face to establish proper function and balance. They've also completed many hours of continuing education focused on breathing and sleep quality, so every smile we create is one that works as beautifully as it looks.

What Is Airway Orthodontics?

Airway orthodontics considers how the structure of the teeth and jaws can directly affect your ability to breathe, sleep, and function well every day. Rather than treating the teeth in isolation, this interdisciplinary approach looks at the full picture — often in collaboration with ENT specialists, pulmonologists, and other healthcare providers.

Common concerns addressed through airway orthodontics include:

  • 01

    Obstructive sleep apnea and snoring

  • 02

    Chronic mouth breathing

  • 03

Bite problems such as excess overbite, overjet, or crowding that constricts the tongue

  • 04

Deficient jaw growth that limits airway space

How Treatment Works

Depending on your individual needs, our orthodontists may recommend:

  • 01

    Growth-Oriented Orthodontics

Palatal expanders and other appliances widen the upper and/or lower jaw, creating more space for the tongue and improving airway function. This approach often avoids tooth extractions.

  • 02

    Jaw Repositioning Appliances

For adults with improper jaw position, options such as MARPE (miniscrew anchored palatal expansion) or SARPE (surgically assisted palatal expansion) may be considered.

  • 03

    Sleep Apnea Devices

Mandibular advancement appliances can reposition the jaw to keep the airway open during sleep.

  • 04

    Coordinated Care

When soft-tissue concerns like enlarged tonsils or adenoids are involved, we work alongside the appropriate specialists.

Who Can Benefit?

Growing children respond especially well to airway intervention because the facial bones are still developing and more easily guided. Early treatment can help prevent deficient facial growth, disturbed sleep, and crowded teeth before they become serious problems.

Adults can also benefit significantly. Resolving dental crowding increases tongue space, and in cases where jaw position is the underlying issue, more advanced expansion procedures can produce meaningful results.
